Fnac lowers the price of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 like never before during the French Days

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is almost a copy of its predecessor, but it has still benefited from a few improvements that make it quite worthy of interest. And the good news is that if it was launched at a really very high price, the latter has just decreased at Fnac, which is offering it at 799 euros instead of 899 euros.

Only one year after the launch with great fanfare of the Apple Watch Ultra, a massive connected watch which is above all designed for athletes, the brand has released a second version, the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Certainly, the firm from Cupertino took over the majority of the technical sheet of the first model for its second version, but some new features still appeared. However, it is not without its flaws, which could be prohibitive for some, especially given the very high base price of the watch. We therefore clearly prefer when it is cheaper, as is currently the case thanks to a small reduction of 11% for French Days.

The highlights of the Apple Watch Ultra 2

  • A screen as beautiful as ever
  • The nice new features of watchOS 10
  • Better autonomy

Launched at 899 euros, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is now offered at 799 euros on fnac.com.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 at the best price?

An unchanged design, a screen as beautiful as ever

It’s difficult to find real physical differences between the first Apple Watch Ultra and the Watch Ultra 2. Here we find the same style of massive connected watch on the wrist, which is therefore anything but discreet, but it’s a point at which we expect it when we talk about a sports watch. The 49mm titanium case and the flat, square screen accentuate this imposing side. Add to that a thickness of 1.44 cm, and you get a tocante that is easily noticed. The physical buttons are identical to those found on the first Watch Ultra. As with the latter, the crown of the Watch Ultra 2 still tends to get stuck in the skin of the wrist…

For the watch screen, Apple has once again opted for an LTPO OLED panel with a definition of 410 × 502 pixels. But it is on brightness that the brand claims to have made progress: while the first Watch Ultra could reach a peak of 2,000 cd/m², the second would be able to climb up to 3,000 cd/m². A choice that seems rather strange to us when we know that the 2,000 nits of the Watch Ultra 1 were more than enough to make the information clearly readable, even in direct sunlight. Furthermore, during our test, we were never able to find this value of 3,000 nits.

Some very practical little new features

If the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is not a revolutionary watch compared to its predecessor, some new features have nevertheless appeared, and we owe the vast majority to watchOS 10. The applications have, for example, been redesigned and Apple has even thought of a completely new way to navigate between applications and display the most useful information. Let’s also talk about one of the major advantages of this Watch Ultra 2: the new double pinching gesture of the thumb and index finger, which allows you to activate certain “main” actions such as replying to a message, answering a call or even pause music. The integration is frankly successful and fun, it must be said. It’s a shame that the Watch Ultra 2 still remains too dependent on touchscreen, especially for a watch that wants to be sporty.

Regarding its health and sports features, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 integrates the same sensors as the first Watch Ultra: an electrical heart rate monitor, a 3rd generation optical heart rate sensor, a blood oxygen level sensor, a GNSS dual frequency, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, an altimeter, a depth gauge or even a temperature sensor. In short, state-of-the-art sensors that offer ultra-precise measurements, such as heart rate or the GNSS chip. But the watch cannot claim to compete with pure sports watches, due in particular to the absence of integrated mapping or even too limited training data analysis. Finally, in terms of autonomy, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 can stay on for more than 3 days without sporting activity. This is excellent for a smartwatch, but a little light for a sports watch.
