“For once, we are not directly interested in the shoes but in what we put inside: the foot! “, launches Gilbert Hulin, co-president of the Shoe Trades Museum Association, in Saint-André-de-la-Marche, delegated commune of Sèvremoine (Maine-et-Loire).

It reopens after its winter break “longer than usual, because the collections are the subject of an inventory as part of the future museum project”, specifies Claire Baubry, elected to heritage in Sèvremoine. Its new temporary exhibition, the 17e since 2003, is therefore called What a foot!

Four themes

Did you know that everyone is made up of 52 bones, 40 muscles and hundreds of sensory receptors. Small surfaces which, however, allow us to stand upright, support our weight and travel on average around 150,000 km during our life.

The exhibition is built around four major themes: beliefs and customs around the foot; step by step, an exploration of the foot; the foot constrained by fashion; and care and health, finding a shoe that fits you. Other themes are covered such as the adaptation of shoes to sports practices.

A partner school

To design it, Sandy Antelme and Anaïs Pineau, museum mediators, spent 250 hours of research to create ten educational panels. Volunteers from the managing association staged them with various objects, because “the exhibition is also designed to be loaned”.

Film, concert and meeting

They came in March for workshops with targeted audiences, and “they made a film to explain their work, their profession, which is visible in the exhibition”underlines Claire Baubry.
