This is “the” problem commuters face when they have to take the train: punctuality. Delays, caused in part by intrusions on the tracks, incidents at level crossings… The rail manager, Infrabel, plans to improve this punctuality, thanks to artificial intelligence. How does it work ?

Cross the railway tracks a few seconds before the train arrives. Sometimes the accident is inevitable, sometimes the driver of the vehicle narrowly escapes… This results in several hours of delay for commuters.

Me, I can’t always tell my superior that someone jumped, that someone crossed, that they brushed against cables“, exasperates a traveler. “It’s an average delay that pushes our patience to the end“, adds another.

Incidents like this occur almost daily. To avoid them, a brand new system is currently being tested in the Infrabel control room. We did the exercise: a vehicle remains immobilized on the rails. After a few seconds, an alarm sounds.

We send out an alarm that reaches all the trains in the area, they must stop. These are cameras equipped with artificial intelligence which makes it possible to identify these dangerous behaviors. They are currently being tested, but they will multiply“, explains Patrice Gérard from the Infrabel control center.

By the end of the year, 70 of these cameras will be installed throughout the country.

It’s a fairly quick implementation because we see that it works. It identifies around twenty incidents per month, which is enormous. There are never any errors, it works very well“, says Benoit Gilson, CEO of Infrabel.

Could these intelligent cameras have an impact on train punctuality?

It takes on average three and a half hours to restore rail traffic after an accident. Last year, this caused nearly 300,000 minutes of delays.
