Hafidha Chekir, a retired academic and women’s rights activist, was recently awarded the “Amal Zannoun Zouani” Prize for 2024, awarded by the International Network for Gender Equality and the Law.

This prize, awarded since 2018, highlights her commitment as a feminist leader and human rights defender in Tunisia.

According to the Arab Center for Human Rights, this distinction highlights Chekir’s efforts in the fight for the rights of women, migrants and people with disabilities.

She has dedicated her career to promoting justice and equality, part of an approach supported by the international network that has been working for gender equality since 2015.

A specialist in public law, Hafidha Chekir currently chairs the scientific committee of the Arab Center for Human Rights. She was also elected vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights in 2016 and has contributed to several studies on women’s political participation.

The “Amal Zannoun Zouani” prize pays tribute to women committed to the defense of human rights and is named after a young Algerian activist assassinated by terrorist groups in 1997. Its objective is to highlight the essential role of women in the fight for human rights and social justice.
