Three days after the Saône accident, the public prosecutor Etienne Manteaux communicated to France 3 Franche-Comté the latest elements of the investigation. The four victims were returning around 1am from the Game Factory in Besançon Chateaufarine, the prosecutor specified.
The tests revealed that the 41-year-old driver was driving with 1.26 grams of alcohol per liter of blood. A level that, in the middle of the night, caused him to lose control of the car. The Volkswagen Passat, which was driving excessively fast on a road limited to 50 km/h, hit a tree that it tore up and then another, explained Benoit Vuillemin, mayor of Saône, the day after the tragedy. “The engine remained on the road, 10 meters from the car” added the mayor.
Technical investigations with the manufacturer confirmed the scenario of crazy speed. The car was indeed traveling at 180 km/h at the time of impact. A macabre speed that trapped the 41-year-old driver, two Brazilians aged 32 and 40, and a 54-year-old citizen of Cape Verde. The four men died instantly. These men worked in construction and public works on the Doubs.
The Brazilian press published images of the four men shortly before the accident. They can be seen singing happily in the vehicle.
This Wednesday, September 18, a time of reflection is organized at 6:00 p.m. in the presence of the victims’ relatives and the Brazilian community. A wreath of flowers will be hung at the scene of the accident in tribute to the victims.
