A fire broke out in Saint-Étienne at the corner of Jean-Huss and Descartes streets, in the Ikea area, around 4:30 p.m. this Wednesday.

The disaster, which started from an individual’s outdoor storage, spread to a one-story residential building. The firefighters deployed an important device given the explosive risk.

Around twenty gas bottles were stored in the damaged building. Two of them exploded while firefighters were already battling the flames.

Due to a large volume of materials stored outdoors, the calorific value of the fire was very high. As the safety of firefighters is a priority, their progress was measured.

The A72 closed

Located less than 30 meters from the burning building, the A72 was cut in both directions and very large traffic jams formed on this axis. The authorities strongly recommended avoiding the sector, which was completely paralyzed.

However, the situation was able to evolve in the direction of Saint-Etienne/Clermont, which was reopened to traffic from 8:30 p.m. But the large scale being positioned on the road in the direction of Clermont/Saint-Etienne, traffic was not there. resumed only after 3 a.m.

Residual outbreaks at 11 p.m.

The intervention therefore took a very long time for the firefighters. At 11 p.m., the main outbreaks were extinguished but residual and difficult-to-access outbreaks persisted.

The system was lightened during the night. A pump machine and two ladders still remained on site.

The house adjacent to the disaster was heavily impacted. Its owner was rehoused by his family.
