Bern cantonal police search for three missing people in waters

(Keystone-SDA) The Bern cantonal police have been searching for three missing people in the Bernese Oberland since the weekend. They are a small child and a man who were out and about at the Giessbach Falls on Sunday. A woman is also missing in the Simmental.

According to current information, she fell into the Iffigbach near the town of Lenk in Simmental on Saturday afternoon, as the Bern cantonal police announced on Monday. She was travelling with a companion. It is still unclear why the woman fell into the water. The search for the woman began immediately.

According to current information, the toddler who fell into the Giessbach Falls and the man belonged to a family with two small children. They were on a hike when one of the children and the father fell into the waterfall on Sunday afternoon for reasons that are also still unclear. In this case, too, the police immediately launched a search operation.

According to their statement, the police conducted two major searches to search for the missing people intensively from both land and water. “Nevertheless, the missing persons have not yet been found.” Both searches had to be interrupted on Sunday evening. However, they will continue.

In addition to numerous patrols and the Bern Cantonal Police’s maritime police, several firefighters, several helicopters and members of the Swiss Alpine Rescue with canyoning specialists were involved in the search operations. The Canton of Bern’s Care Team was also deployed to look after the affected people.

The Giessbach Falls are located next to a hotel on Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland.
