After the defeat at the start of the year against Bayer Leverkusen, BVB needs a win. Against the champions, coach Nuri Sahin had to cope with a number of absences due to illness, and it was still not clear what the personnel situation would be the day before the Kiel game.
An hour before the start of the game it became clear: Sahin can count on a number of regular players again – and changed his starting eleven to five positions compared to the last game against Leverkusen.
“If you had heard the boys on Friday, you wouldn’t have believed that they would be there again. Of course the boys aren’t at 100 percent, but we’re glad they’re back. We don’t yet know how long they will last, but we are optimistic, the bench is also well staffed,” said head coach Sahin Sky.

The balance sheet speaks for BVB
Holstein Kiel and Borussia Dortmund meet today in the Holstein Stadium, and history speaks clearly for BVB. In previous encounters in the DFB Cup, Dortmund clearly prevailed: in 2011/12 with a 4-0 away win in the quarter-finals and in 2020/21 with a 5-0 home win in the semi-finals.
But Dortmund’s current form in the Bundesliga is cause for concern. With just one win from the last five league games and a total of 25 points after 16 games, BVB is having its weakest season in seven years.

BVB faces the worst defense
Holstein Kiel has struggled with defensive problems this season. With 41 goals conceded, the Störche have the weakest defense in the Bundesliga and are the first league newcomers since the Stuttgarter Kickers in 1988/89 to concede so many goals in their first 16 games.
Kiel also conceded the most penalties against them this season and all four penalties were converted.
Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy could benefit from this as he recently scored from the penalty spot after four goalless games and converted all of his ten attempts from the spot in the Bundesliga.

Offensive hopefuls and rotation strategies
On the offensive, Holstein Kiel can rely on Phil Harres, who scored four goals on the last two matchdays and thus equaled Shuto Machino as the Storks’ top scorer.
Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, is hoping for Jamie Gittens, who scored his tenth goal of the season in the 2-3 win against Bayer Leverkusen and is the league’s strongest dribbling player this season.
Both teams have already made 40 starting eleven changes this season, which indicates a high level of rotation and adaptability. Only Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Bayern Munich rotated more frequently.
