After a strong earthquake, Japanese authorities initially issued a tsunami warning.

A strong earthquake struck southwestern Japan. Authorities reported the magnitude as 6.9 and initially warned of tsunamis in the region. Waves of around one meter high are expected, reported the television station NHK. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has since withdrawn the tsunami warning.

Authorities have now urged locals not to go into the sea or approach the coast until the warning is lifted, the country’s weather agency said on X.

The earthquake hit the island of Kyushu, according to reports, at around 9:19 p.m. (local time). Nothing has yet been reported about possible damage or injuries. According to CNN, authorities issued an earthquake warning for Miyazaki province on the island of Kyushu and the southern Japanese prefecture of Kochi.
