The Minister of Health confirmed this. New variant of monkeypox virus, Mpox, has been identified for the first time in Monday January 6. A woman is hospitalized at University Hospital.

According to information from West France, the patient is doing well. She did not travel but was in contact with two people returning from a stay in central Africa, where monkeypox has been actively circulating for several months. Investigations are underway to find the origin of this contamination.

According to Karine Lacombe, infectious disease specialist at Saint-Antoine hospital in , there is “no concern” to date about an expansion of the epidemic. According to her, prevention measures such as “vaccination and reductions in skin contact and sexual contact” are sufficient to contain the number of cases.

“It is an epidemic that has been raging for several months. A few cases have been detected in Europe, notably in Germany and Englandin very small quantities. It's not very surprising that we have it in France and that doesn't mean that it's an epidemic that will spread throughout the country,” explains Karine Lacombe.
