The renaming of the Supercup to “Franz Beckenbauer Supercup” met with criticism from Berti Vogts. He would have preferred a different solution.
Munich – From next season, the clash between the German champions and the DFB Cup winner will no longer just be referred to as the Supercup. Instead, the match will be titled “Franz Beckenbauer Supercup”. However, it remains questionable whether this name change can increase the attractiveness of the less popular competition. Berti Vogts sees the chosen form of honoring the “Emperor” as merely a suboptimal solution.
Berti Vogts expresses concern that Franz Beckenbauer could be forgotten
January 7th marks the first anniversary of Franz Beckenbauer's death. Berti Vogts takes this as an opportunity to remember his long-time companion. His fear: “The name Beckenbauer no longer means anything to many young football players,” as he told the Rhenish Post emphasized.
“A player like Franz must never be forgotten. He is on a par with players like Pelé and the other greatest footballers of all time,” explained the former DFB coach. The name Pelé is known to everyone in Brazil, and Vogts would like the FC Bayern legend to be similarly known in Germany. Although he describes “naming the Supercup after him” as “really great,” he would have preferred a different form of honor.
Vogts would have liked the DFB Cup to be renamed in honor of Beckenbauer
Vogts is of the opinion that Beckenbauer “deserves even more” than renaming the Supercup, which is “just a game” – a fact that he finds “a shame”. “I would have liked the DFB Cup to be named after Franz. This competition runs all year round and it is not just a game. And there are many more clubs playing, all of which would then be involved in his name.” Shortly after Beckenbauer’s death, Vogts brought up the idea of renaming the DFB Cup in honor of the “Emperor”.
Many fans will agree with Vogts' assessment of the current solution. The Supercup is largely unpopular with them and from a sporting perspective, the DFL competition is often not of the highest importance, as the participating teams rarely send their entire A team onto the pitch.
A documentary about Beckenbauer moves people's minds
A year after Franz Beckenbauer's death, not only Berti Vogts looks back on his life. A ZDF documentary allows many of the “Emperor’s” companions to have their say. Including his brother Walter, who remembered the intimate last moments with Franz. (sch)
