Since the creation of the Trophée des Champions in 1995, a few clubs have headed into this annual match as winners of Ligue 1 McDonald’s and the Coupe de France.
Ahead of AS Monaco taking on Paris Saint-Germain on January 5 at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatarlet’s look at the past double winners, including PSG who enter this contest having won the league and domestic cup.
AJ Auxerre (1995-96)
The Trophée des Champions was notably absent in its second year, and the reason was AJ Auxerre pulled off a remarkable double. They clinched the league title with 72 points, narrowly outpacing PSG and AS Monaco, who finished on 68 points in a tightly contested season.
Auxerre’s attack was spearheaded by Corentin Martinswho netted an impressive 13 league goals, with Lilian Laslandes providing strong support by adding 12 goals to the tally.
The Coupe de France campaign for Auxerre was nothing short of extraordinary. Their run to the final saw them defeat a series of quality opponents, including Olympique Lyonnais, Le Mans UC 72PSG, ASOA Valenceand Olympic Marseille.
Their journey culminated in a showdown against Nimes Olympiccapping an unforgettable run. Auxerre would secure a 2-1 win in the final thanks to goals from Laurent Blanc and Laslandes.
Olympique Lyonnais (2007-08)
Over a decade would pass before there was another double winner, with OL lifting the Ligue 1 McDonald’s and Coupe de France trophy in the same season. However, unlike in 1996, the Trophée des Champions would proceed as Lyon faced league runners-up Bordeaux.
Les Gones secured the Ligue 1 title in thrilling fashion, finishing the season with 79 points, four ahead of Bordeaux. At the heart of their success was a young Karim Benzemawhose 20 league goals were instrumental in driving Olympique Lyonnais to glory.
In the Coupe de France, Lyon triumphed over US Créteil-L, Savoy Cross, FC Sochaux, FC Metzand CS Sedan to set up a final clash with PSG. OL claimed the trophy after an extra-time goal from Sidney Gove sealed their victory in the 2008 final.
LOSC Lille (2010-11)
Similar to 2008, the 2011 Trophée des Champions saw Lille take on league runners-up Marseille, with the match taking place in Morocco.
It took just three years for another double winner to emerge in France, as Lille clinched both the Ligue 1 McDonald’s title and the Coupe de France. The Mastiffs topped the league with 76 points, leaving Olympic Marseille in second place with 68 points.
Moussa Sow led Lille’s attack with 25 goals, while Gervinho was a key contributor, netting 15 goals in Ligue 1 that season.
As for the Coupe de France, LOSC recorded wins over Wasquehal, FC Nantes, FC Lorientand OGC Nice to advance to the final, where they met PSG. In a tightly contested match, Lille defeated the Parisians 1-0 thanks to an 89th minute goal from Ludovic Obraniak.
Paris Saint-Germain (2014-15; 2015-16; 2017-18; 2019-20; 2023-24)
Since 2015, PSG have secured the domestic double five times, with their most recent success coming in the previous campaign under Luis Enrique, who claimed the two trophies in his first season as manager of the capital club.
Throughout this run, PSG have relied on star players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar Jr., and Kylian Mbappé to lead the charge. The Parisians have also secured these doubles under the guidance of managers such as Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery, Thomas Tucheland Luis Enrique.
In the Coupe de France, the capital club have also defeated various oppositions in the final as they took down ALSO Auxerre in 2015, OM in 2016, Les Herbiers VF in 2018, Saint-Étienne in 2020, and OL last season.
