Shōgun's Tadanobu Asano took home the trophy for best performance by a male actor in a supporting role in a TV series at the 2025 Golden Globes.
Asano walked away with the prize, beating fellow nominees Javier Bardem in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez StoryHarrison Ford in ShrinkingJack Lowden in Slow HorsesDiego Luna in The Machine and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in The Bear.
“Wow, maybe you dont’ know me. I’m an actor from Japan and my name is Tadanobu Asano,” the actor said Sunday, Jan. 5, after climbing on stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to accept the trophy. “This is a very big present for me! I’m very happy. Thank you!”

This is 51-year-old Asano’s first-ever Golden Globe nomination, which he received for his role as Kashigi Yabushige in Shōgun. The FX drama was the second most nominated show at this year’s Golden Globes, raking in four nominations — including best television drama series — alongside Only Murders in the Building (both landed with just one less than The Bear). Asano’s costars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are also nominees.
Shōgun was also largely recognized at the 2024 Emmys, where it received 25 nominations and took home 18 wins — more than any other show. It is slated for a three-season run, but it is unknown if Asano will return after season 1 ended with him being killed in a ritualistic suicide.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporterco-creator Justin Marks shared, “The third season is really an ending. We know where it starts, and we know where it ends, and we know who is there on that journey.”
He continued, “We’re just focusing on part two right now to really make sure we can get to that point.”
Though only one actor could walk away with the award, the category was filled with notable performances this year.

Bardem, 55, starred in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as José Menendez. This is his sixth Golden Globe nomination, and he has one win under his belt for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture from his 2008 role in No Country for Old Men.
In November, the Spanish actor told Variety how he got into character for the award-worthy part, saying, “I didn’t know much or more basically anything about the story when [series co-creator] Ryan Murphy talked to me, because it wasn’t that big in Spain.”
“And then once I dig in, I was like, ‘Wow, this is really, really sensitive material,’” he added. “I knew I had to trust the research Ryan and [co-creator] Ian Brennan did. It was all there in the writing. So I said, ‘I don’t need to talk to anybody.’ And also I was very, very…the word is not scared, but I never felt for a second that I would be able to sit down with the murderers.”
His costar and onscreen son Cooper Koch, who played Erik Menendez, was also nominated for best performance by a male actor in a limited series, anthology series or a motion picture made for television, and the show itself was nominated for best picture in that category.

The legendary Ford, 82, plays psychiatrist Paul Rhodes, who is navigating his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease, in Shrinking. He has been applauded for his portrayal of the character, telling PEOPLE in December that he takes the role “deadly f—ing seriously.”
“There’s no intention to make it into a joke,” he explained. “But there are people that absorb these kinds of experiences with grace and courage and a little bit of wisdom. And that is not to say that some people do not.”
“It’s just to say that this is a person particularly equipped to communicate what it is that it’s like, and that is something that I feel that is worth sharing with our audience,” he added.
Ford has a long history of achievements at the Golden Globes, having been nominated for five and being honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2002. Along with his nomination, the show was also recognized with Ford’s costar Jason Segel’s nomination this year for best performance by a male actor in a musical or comedy television series.

Lowden, 34, received his nomination for his role as River Cartwright in the thriller series Slow Horses. The show was also nominated for best television drama series and lead Gary Oldman received a nomination for best performance by a male actor in a drama television series. Oldman was also nominated in 2024.
Slow Horses, which has four seasons, was created by Will Smith (different from the famed actor Will Smith), who won a 2024 Emmy for outstanding writing for a drama series in September.
When accepting his award at the time, he joked: “First of all, relax — despite my name, I come in peace,” referencing the moment when the Academy Award winning actor, 55, slapped Chris Rock onstage in 2021. The joke earned laughter and applause from the audience for Slow Horses‘ Smith, who adapted the Apple TV+ series from author Mick Herron’s Slough House spy novels.

Luna, 45, is up for his second Golden Globe nomination for The Machine, Hulu’s first Spanish-language series. He is the only person from the show nominated following its six-episode release, which examined the life and final fight of a career boxer (Gael Garcia Bernal).
In October, Luna explained to PEOPLE how he and Bernal, who he had known since childhood, worked together in the coming-of-age drama.
“We’ve done a lot to cultivate this friendship, and we’ve asked each other many times in life, ‘You’ve got to wake up here. We have to take care of this.’ Sometimes him, sometimes me, sometimes someone else comes and says like, ‘Guys, are you sure you’re doing what you have to be doing?’” Luna said. “But there is something bigger that keeps us together.”
FX
Moss-Bachrach, 47, was one of five nominations FX’s The Bear received this year. He was also nominated in the same category in the 2024 Golden Globes before winning for his role of Richard “Richie” Jeromovich at the 2024 Emmys (his first ever).
“This job is such a gift. It’s such a privilege to work with these wonderful actors. We have the best crew. We have this incredible Chicago crew,” he said in his acceptance speech in January 2024, before thanking more loved ones and colleagues.
He later told The Guardian that it was “one of the most joyful nights of my life.”
The series, which follows the eclectic workers at a Chicago sandwich shop, was also nominated for best musical or comedy television series, along with nominations for stars Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Allen White and Liza Colón-Zayas, at this year’s Golden Globes.
