The government of François Bayrou

How can we convey the words of a man who has sometimes been severely criticized in the past? How can you be a spokesperson for a government headed by a political figure with whom you don't always share the same ideas? The journalist from TF1 and LCI Paul Larrouturou, after having unearthed in recent days critical tweets from the new government spokesperson, Sophie Primas, towards Prime Minister François Bayrou, asked him these questions directly this Friday, January 3 during his first report of the Council of Ministers.

“I am in a position where, I said earlier, I am part of the Republican right, of the Republicans, that there was a history with Bayrou that was sometimes a little tumultuous”she explained, in particular the fact that he called for voting for François Hollande rather than Nicolas Sarkozy in 2012. “But what brings us together today is the defense of our country, the return to a movement for our country, rediscovering the fundamentals for our country, and that is much more important than our history, our quibbles past, and that seems to us to be much more important to bear today than this story”added the former minister responsible for foreign trade in the Barnier government.

“I sometimes use irony”

“Sometimes I use irony, including in my tweets”also wanted to clarify Sophie Primas. “When I said 'hello, I'm back', we were talking about the old world, because in 2017 we talked a lot about the new world, but by tweeting that I simply wanted to bring to light that the experience of elected officials on the ground, that has value and that ultimately, we come back to it.”

In “Bonjour! La Matinale TF1”, Paul Larrouturou compiled a compilation of old critical messages from the spokesperson published on Twitter which has become X in recent years. “Hello, I’m back”she wrote in February 2024, sharing an article from L’Opinion in which François Bayrou, questioned about a possible return to the government after his acquittal in the context of the MoDem parliamentary assistants affair, said he did not “never shied away from any request for service for our country”. To an Internet user who said they did not understand the interest of a High Commissioner for Planning, a position he has held since September 2020, she also responded: “This is a reward for Mr. Bayrou. (…) 2022 is being prepared. That’s it.”

“14 tweets in 7 years, it’s okay, it’s reasonable”she smiled this Friday.
