Will the mayor succeed in getting the traveling people ? Families belonging to the Traveler community have settled on two private lands, including one particularly sensitive, in the commune of Oullins-Pierre-Bénite in the metropolis of Lyon.
Jérôme Moroge (Les Républicains) is annoyed and sees red in the face of the illegal settlement of Travelers. A first camp was set up on private land, at 183 rue de Martyrs, at the location where a real estate project is to be launched. The occupants took up residence on site despite a fence, according to our colleagues from Progress.

Second area targeted by another group of travelers: a parking area of the Courtepaille restaurant which has been closed for several months. This zone is classified red on the Technological Risk Prevention Plan (PPRT), in a sector located in the immediate vicinity of the sensitive Seveso Arkema and Daikin sites in the chemical valley.
“I made the decision to directly contact the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, in order to request rapid and effective intervention from the State and the police,” said the mayor of Oullins-Pierre-Bénite. .
The prefecture “will grant the assistance of the public force with a view to an evacuation as soon as a court decision requesting the evacuation has been pronounced”, commented tonews Lyon prefectural services.
New national measures planned
During a trip to Metz (Moselle), the minister, questioned on the subject, announced new planned measures.
“The law is the same for everyone. Elected officials are exasperated to see caravans illegally occupying land, when there are reception areas. Our compatriots are exasperated when illegal connections are observed, electricity or water is diverted, and the land is not made clean. This is not tolerable. It is out of the question to have a form of dual citizenship, those who comply with the rules and those who could escape them,” he said last November.
The Interior Minister should convene a working group to determine a new doctrine of intervention and a new arsenal aimed at hitting Travelers' wallets. Conclusions for new measurements are expected in spring 2025.
