Swore. Icy snow weather alert: watch out for slippery phenomena

Météo has placed the Jura department on yellow “rain-flood” alert, from this Thursday, January 2, at 6 a.m., until Friday, January 3 in the morning. Accumulations of around 20 mm on the plain and 30 mm on the Franche-Comté terrain are expected. Above 500 meters of altitude on the Jura relief, it will be snow that will stick to the ground for a long time, “which will clearly limit runoff in this sector”, specifies the Jura prefecture. In the process, Météo France placed the Jura on yellow “violent wind” alert for Thursday. “Wind gusts of 50 to 70 km/h, or locally 80 km/h, will occur during the day, before the disturbance spreads over Switzerland,” specifies the weather alert.

Temperatures that will drop quickly

A few hours later, in the middle of the afternoon, Météo France placed the Jura department on yellow “snow-ice” alert this time, for a risk of slippery phenomena until Friday January 3. Behind the disturbance which will have crossed the department, temperatures will drop sharply that evening and overnight, hence the risk of wet roads refreezing. This risk is more marked during nighttime clearings. In the second part of the night, freezing drizzle will be possible locally. This Friday morning, minimum temperatures will be between -4°C and -1°C in the plains, -10°C to -5°C in the Jura terrain. Temperatures will gradually rise on Friday morning, and will reach a maximum of 0 to 4°C in the plains.

Snow and ice: what to do

These weather conditions call for increased vigilance on the part of everyone, and in particular road users. If you travel, the Jura prefecture reminds you that you must bring special equipment and scrupulously respect deviations and traffic instructions. You should also turn on your low beam or fog lights and use the ventilation and defrosting systems, in order to allow the windshield wipers to work properly.

To limit the risk of slipping, you should avoid accelerations and jerks. The prefecture also reminds that you should not overtake a snow removal vehicle in action and that you should never run an engine to heat the vehicle if it is blocked by snow, the exhaust gases can cause asphyxiation. . The authorities encourage motorists to finally provide minimum equipment in the event of prolonged immobilization. The vehicle must not be left under any circumstances, only at the request of the rescuers.
