On the Italian side of Monte Rosa, a huge piece of rock fell down the valley at the weekend. It happened at night. Local mountain rescuer Luca Tondal captured the scene using a drone and published the images on his Instagram page.

He says he is very lucky that no one was injured in the rock fall. The images show brown material covering the snow-covered rocks. Tondal warns against going to the affected area in the next few days.

The site of the rock fall is in the southern summit area of the Dufourspitze. “The replacement is still in progress,” writes Tondal. Apparently the cloud of dust also reached the currently closed Zamboni Zappa hut. The exact extent and any damage is currently unknown.
In recent years and months there has been an increase in rock falls in the Alpine region. Experts have blamed higher temperatures as a result of climate change. This has to do with the disappearing permafrost. Weather events could also be the cause. However, it is not clear whether this can explain the current case.

The last time was in August There was a spectacular rock fall on the Matterhorn.
