Bedford Borough Council urges residents to look out for vulnerable neighbours during Amber Cold-Health Alert

Bedford Borough Council’s Public Health team is encouraging residents to check on their vulnerable friends, relatives, and neighbours after an Amber Cold-Health Alert was issued.

The alert highlights the importance of community action during periods of extreme weather and will remain in place until 8 January. Councillor Martin Towler, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities: Health and Wellbeing, said: “During periods of extreme weather, hot and cold alike, we must look out for one another. The simple act of checking on a neighbour, family member, or friend can make a significant difference and ensure their safety and wellbeing.”

To support residents, the Council has partnered with local organisations to provide a network of Welcoming Spaces across Bedford Borough. These warm, inviting venues are open to everyone, offering a place to get warm, enjoy company, or spend time quietly. Many spaces also provide tea, coffee, Wi-Fi, board games, and baby-changing facilities. A full list of Welcoming Spaces, including Bedford Borough libraries, can be found at https://www.bedford.gov.uk/benefits-and-support/welcoming-spaces/welcoming-spaces.

For medical concerns, residents are reminded to “think 111 first.” Visit https://111.nhs.uk/ or call NHS 111 for advice and guidance on accessing urgent medical help. You can also receive advice from your local pharmacy. Visit https://www.nhs.uk/service-search/pharmacy/find-a-pharmacy to find your nearest one.

Additionally, the Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning for snow and ice in the East of England from midday on Saturday, 4 January, until 11:59pm on Sunday, 5 January.
