The scene, particularly shocking, was filmed by video surveillance cameras. The person burned alive on December 22 in the New York subway (United States) has finally been identified, CNN reports this Tuesday, December 31.
The victim, aged 57, is named Debrina Kawam and resided in New Jersey, medical examiners said. The examinations made it possible to determine that “the woman had died of homicide caused by thermal injuries and smoke inhalation,” they specify.
Debrina Kawam was killed on December 22 while sleeping on the subway at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. A man then used a lighter to set his clothes on fire. A police source told CNN that police initially believed the victim was a homeless person, which complicated the investigations.
The suspect, a 33-year-old undocumented immigrant, was charged with murder and arson after being identified using surveillance camera videos. He is due to appear on January 7. During his first hearing before the court, the latter claimed to have no knowledge of the facts, while claiming to have consumed alcohol.
