Because of the storm, the fireworks display on Helgoland was canceled. And anyone who wants to travel to the island also has a problem. Fits into this turbulent year…

It’s a difficult end of the year for islanders and travelers who want to go to Helgoland. Because of the storm, the ferry connection from Cuxhaven has to be canceled for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. And the fireworks display also had to be canceled. There had already been problems during the Christmas holidays.

According to forecasts from the German Weather Service (DWD), two severe storms are approaching from the British Isles. Wave heights of up to five meters are expected at the turn of the year – that’s too much. Hurricane gusts are also possible.

The scheduled connection for New Year’s Day was also canceled by the shipping company Cassen Eils. The first scheduled connection in 2025 will therefore be on January 2nd. Some Travelers are therefore stuck on Helgoland. This has happened to us before – it was wonderful. You can read the story about it in our Little Book of the Sea: Lighthouses.

Overall, it was an unusually stormy season for the island. The catamaran was unable to get from Hamburg via Cuxhaven more than 20 times. The “MS Helgoland”, the most reliable connection, could not leave before Christmas due to a storm.

The island administration has canceled a planned fireworks display. There will still be a party in the Nordseehalle on New Year’s Eve – and the “bathing” on New Year’s Day will also take place for diehards.

We regularly go over to the island on the “Spit Bag Tour”. The next dates will soon be announced here on the site. This is what it looks like when things get rocky on the “MS Helgoland”.
