A sad label. For more than 80 years, the inhabitants of the city of the Mutein Drancy (Seine-Saint-Denis) live with the painful memory of the Second World War. In these habitats where horror preceded them. But this neighborhood will soon undergo a major renovation. On this occasion, the Heritage Foundation announced, Thursday December 19, 2024, aid of 300 000 euros.
63,000 Jews deported from La Muette
From 2025, the 368 social housing units will be rehabilitated during a gigantic project which should be completed in 2027. Upgrading to standards, transformation of stairwells, union of several dwellings… Important work which must give a second life to these buildings whose facades are classified as Historical monuments.
The Heritage Foundation did not choose this place at random. Between 1941 and 1944, tragedy crept between the walls. Nearly a decade after its construction by the low-cost housing office (HBM) of the Seine, the district was requisitioned by the Wehrmach, the German army, in June 1940. The decision was taken tointernal of the prisoners of war before their deportation to concentration and extermination camps.
A few months later, these are the Jews who will be interned in the city of La Muette, before also being forcibly dragged to the death camps. According to the Shoah Memorial, installed in the city of La Muette, nearly 63,000 Jews were deported from the Drancy camp. The majority of them towards the campAuschwitz-Birkenauin Poland.
After the Second World War, renovation work was undertaken to accommodate new families. There are still five 15-story towers modeled on an American urban planning model. Finally, these skyscrapers were demolished in the 1970s, as indicated by the Ministry of Culture. Graffiti dating from the Second World War, represented by prisoners, is still present. They will be kept.
