Fredrik Möller wins his first World Cup race with the Super-G in Bormio. The 24-year-old Norwegian won ahead of the Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr and the once again surprising Swiss Alexis Monney.

Möller already showed signs of his potential in the Super-G this season. In Beaver Creek and in Val Gardena he finished 4th twice. Now he has achieved a really big coup in his only eighth Super-G at the highest level. With start number 4, he set a time that none of his competitors could match. Möller made the difference at the top and at the bottom with the best section times. Vincent Kriechmayr came closest to the surprising Norwegian. The 2021 world champion lost two tenths.

Monney surprises again

Alexis Monney achieved his second World Cup podium. 24 hours after his sensational victory in the downhill, the 24-year-old from Freiburg delivered another amazing performance on the “Stelvio” slope. As with his triumph on Saturday, Monney wasn’t one of the fastest on Sunday either, but he then turned up the heat and only lost 24 hundredths to the winner. He has never been ranked better in the Super-G than in 17th place.

With start number 27, Monney snatched the third podium place of his career from Stefan Rogentin. Like his teammate at the top, the Graubünden native lost a lot of time and is 42 hundredths behind in fourth place.

Odermatt’s mistake, Caviezel’s fall

Marco Odermatt surprisingly missed the podium finish. A dominant winner in Bormio in the previous two years, not everything came together this time. Before the “Carcentina” traverse – one of the key points – the leader in the discipline classification had to take a long journey. So Odermatt lost a lot of time that he couldn’t make up for down below. The man from Nidwalden had to settle for 5th place, meaning he missed out on making it into the top 3 for only the fourth time in the last 20 Super-G races. Franjo von Allmen once again demonstrated his good form and completed the great Swiss team result in sixth place.

The year came to an unpleasant end for Gino Caviezel. The Graubünden man, who opened the race, got his left ski stuck on a gate before the San Pietro jump and fell. After a long period of sliding, he came to a stop on the flat section and immediately signaled that he had hurt his right leg. After lengthy treatment, Caviezel was transported away by helicopter.

Loïc Meillard did not start. The man from Neuchâtel, who lives in Valais, decided not to take part due to persistent back problems. (riz/sda)

The Swiss downhill team brings back memories of the golden 1980s. In the third race of the winter, the third double victory was achieved – and for once without Marco Odermatt being involved. Instead, Alexis Monney celebrates his first World Cup victory.

“It’s a strange feeling – but a cool one!” Alexis Monney visibly had difficulty processing what had happened when he spoke about his victory on SRF. At the age of 24, the man from Freiburg hit the World Cup for the first time, having never been better than eighth before.
