Wilfried Singo, Monaco right-back, posted a message on Instagram to apologize to Gianluigi Donnarumma, who he severely injured in the face by inadvertently hitting him with a sole.

A message in French, then another translated into Italian. Wilfried Singo (23) apologized to Gianluigi Donnarumma in a story published on his Instagram account a few hours after the Monaco-PSG match (2-4) on Wednesday. The right back was one of the big players in the match but not for a decisive action. Carried away by his momentum after too long a control, the right-back delivered a violent sole in the face of the Parisian goalkeeper. The latter was immediately replaced by Matvey Safonov, leaving the field with impressive wounds on his right cheek.

“My action was obviously not voluntary”

Neither warned nor sent off for this gesture, the Ivorian international finished the match, before having a thought for the Italian international. “I would like to apologize to Gianluigi Donnarumma,” he wrote in his message. “My action was obviously not voluntary, but I was able to see later that he had a significant injury to his face. I wish you a good recovery.”

Singo, who arrived in Monaco in 2023 from Torino, had been warned a little earlier in the match for a foul (13th). His gesture on Donnarumma came four minutes later (17th) and the lack of sanction outraged several Parisian players, including captain Marquinhos. “I don’t know if the referee was in the wrong place, but VAR had to be called, we have to protect the players,” he lamented. “In a situation like this, don’t put red, it’s strong.”

The referee M.Letexier refused to speak at the end of the match but his decision could be motivated by the application of law 12.1 of the IFAB. “We speak of a reckless attitude when a player competes for the ball without attention, consideration or precaution.” François Letexier therefore leaned towards the interpretation of reckless attitude rather than the qualification of “inconsiderate attitudes” which could be punished with a yellow or red card.

In the evening, PSG published a press release to provide news of its goalkeeper who suffers from “facial trauma with multiple wounds”. Returning to with his partners during the night, he will undergo medical examinations on Thursday and “will have to remain inactive for several days”.
