VICTORIA — British Columbia is offering financial assistance to victims of flooding that swept through several communities when an atmospheric river dumped hundreds of millimeters of rain on parts of the province last month.
Flood-affected residents of Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Squamish First Nation and North and West Vancouver are eligible, the province said.
Financial assistance of up to $400,000 per claim is intended to compensate for “sudden, unexpected and uninsurable losses,” such as damage to a primary residence and the removal of debris.
The deadline for applications is February 23, 2025.
The atmospheric river that hit British Columbia's south coast from October 18 to 20 brought nearly 350 millimeters of rain to some areas, sending torrents into the streets, such as Deep Cove in North Vancouver.
Flooding and rain have been linked to at least four deaths, including a woman who was killed when her home was swept away by a landslide in suburban Coquitlam.
A man's body was also found days after witnesses saw him fall into the swollen Coquitlam River while trying to save a dog.
