Former Prime Minister Pauline Marois was named chancellor of the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM) on Tuesday, becoming the first woman to occupy this position.

“I am very proud to be able to carry the voice of UQAM, which has been able to combine accessibility, quality of teaching and advancement of knowledge,” declared Ms.me Marois. I share the values ​​of audacity and commitment to the community of this public university born from the Quiet Revolution.”

For his first mandate, Mr.me Marois succeeds Réal Raymond, chancellor of UQAM from 2008 to 2013, and Pierre J. Jeanniot, who held the same functions from 1995 to 2008.

The status of chancellor will allow Mme Marois to improve the governance of the University, to support the rector in his external representation activities and to officially represent the University with the rector and the president of the Board of Directors.

“I am very happy that Pauline Marois has agreed to be chancellor of UQAM. It is a privilege to welcome this exceptional woman into the university community, whose human qualities and values ​​of social commitment match those of UQAM,” said the rector, Stéphane Pallage.

“For 55 years, UQAM has contributed remarkably to the development of Quebec and today it has major projects that I will support with enthusiasm,” added the woman who was the first woman to hold the position of Premier of Quebec.
