Sydney Sweeney admitted that she hadn’t planned to address the dating rumours, but once the film became a hit, the topic kept popping up.
Fans of Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney might have jumped to the wrong conclusion, as these two were never romantically involved off-screen. Yet, they didn’t mind letting the speculation run wild. In a recent interview, the Anyone But You stars opened up about how they leaned into the dating rumours swirling around them during filming, fueling buzz for the film in a way that helped it rake in over $220 million globally.
Sweeney admitted that she hadn’t planned to address the dating rumours, but once the film became a hit, the topic kept popping up. She didn’t want to mislead, but she also wasn’t inclined to dodge the questions. “Once it did become a success, a lot of the interviews were just questions about it, so I don’t know if we necessarily were planning on ever talking about the strategy behind any of it,” she shared with Vanity Fair.
Back in April, the pair spoke with the New York Times about the elements that made Anyone But You a rom-com success. One of these elements? Not shutting down the dating rumours. Powell, who reportedly split from his girlfriend shortly after the filming wrapped, was still catching attention in viral photos with Sweeney in Australia. Meanwhile, Sweeney remained engaged to Jonathan Davino, but the duo’s on-screen chemistry was so compelling, fans couldn’t help but speculate about an off-screen romance, reports Bustle.
Rather than dispelling the rumours, the two decided to play along. “The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry,” Powell explained. “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully,” he added.
Sweeney reportedly had been deeply involved in the film’s marketing strategy. “I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film, because at the end of the day, they’re the ones who created the entire narrative,” she told the Times. Powell gave credit to Sweeney for the clever strategy, calling it “very smart.”
Reflecting on the film’s success, Powell shared with Vanity Fair how he’s come to view press tours as another way to entertain fans. “I think what people forget about with a press tour is that it’s its own sense of entertainment. I don’t think it’s duplicitous,” he explained.
For now, they’re leaving fans with memories of their sizzling chemistry and a box-office hit that will be talked about for years to come.
