Third-ranked slippery Stingers skate past No.5 hockey Redbirds in cross-town confrontation

LAVAL, QUE – Left-winger Isiah Campbell scored the game-winner and assisted on the insurance marker as Concordia tripled McGill 3-1 in OUA men’s hockey before a capacity crowd at the 400-seat Place Bell community rink, Friday.

The result improved division-leading Concordia’s record to 10-0-1, while the Redbirds dropped to 5-4 and remained in a tie with Ottawa (5-5-0) for fifth place in the nine-team OUA East. McGill, which swept the Stingers in the OUA East semifinals last spring, is now 0-2 against the Stingers this fall.

The teams were deadlocked at 0-0 after the opening period before Concordia had the best scoring chance when Mikael Huchett found himself on a breakaway from the McGill blueline. He was stopped on the play by McGill goaltender Alexis Shank but the referee awarded a penalty shot because McGill’s Stephane Huard had thrown his stick at the puck near the blueline. For some reason, the Stingers designated another player to take the shot and Charles Savoie was thwarted by Shank, who ended up with 39 saves in a losing cause.

Daniel Agostino and Isiah Campbellpotted a pair less than three minutes apart in the second stanza. They took a 3-0 stranglehold in the third on a goal by Hutchette before McGill’s Xavier Fortin spoiled a shutout bid by goaltender Nikolas Hurtubise with only 1:44 remaining in the contest. The Stingers had a 42-20 edge in shots and went 1-for-4 on the power-play while McGill was 0-for-4.

The Redbirds will close out the season series between the cross-town rivals with the 37th annual Ronald Cory Cup rivalry game at the Ed Meagher Arena in a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday (Nov. 10). McGill holds a slim 117-116-14 lead in 247 lifetime meetings since the series began in 1975.
