A major operation took place this Sunday in Annecy (Haute-Savoie), in the Hirondelles district, after the discovery of a bomb dating from the Second World War, spotted on October 22, reports Le Parisien. The explosive device had been secured by specialist teams, but its defusing required strict measures. To guarantee everyone's safety, 3,800 residents were evacuated and an area of 400 meters around the machine was cordoned off.

From 8:30 a.m., the police roamed the streets of the neighborhood, sirens activated, to wake residents and invite them to leave their homes. Adapted support, including shuttles, had been planned for people in difficulty or with reduced mobility. These measures were coordinated by more than 200 municipal agents, mobilized for this exceptional day.

During the entire operation, no activity or traffic was authorized in the area. The prefect indicated that the return of residents would only be authorized after confirmation of the complete security of the vehicle.

City-wide disruptions

The operation had a significant impact on local infrastructure. Several roads were cut, and the Annecy SNCF station temporarily closed, immobilizing the main tracks as well as the signal box. These disruptions affected many travelers and residents, who had to adapt their travel.

François Astorg, mayor of Annecy, welcomed the mobilization of municipal teams and security services to guarantee the smooth running of the mine clearance. This event highlights the sometimes dangerous legacy left by past conflicts and the importance of such interventions to preserve the security of local populations. Once the operation is completed, residents should be able to return to their homes in the evening, after the green light from the competent authorities.
