Felipe Orts managed to surprise the cyclo-cross world a week ago by finishing second at the European Championships in ‘his’ Pontevedra, but the Spanish champion showed today in Niel’s Superprestige that his European Championship silver medal was not a one-off achievement. Orts rode to a good second place on the muddy circuit in Niel.
The 29-year-old rider of Ridley Racing Team only had to acknowledge his superiority in Laurens Sweeck, although Orts came quite close to the Belgian in the last lap. “I am extremely satisfied with my competition and the result I achieved,” he signs The Newspaper from the mouth of the Spaniard.
“At the end of the cross I still had some energy left to enter the final, with Niels Vandeputte and Eli Iserbyt,” Orts continues. “It was difficult in the final phase, but luckily I still managed to finish second. I had organized my match well. The race was tough. Anyone who went into the red quite quickly here was disappointed.”
The fact that the riders were presented with a mud cross again today was to Orts’ advantage. “I just have a good feeling on a muddy track. The blubber doesn’t bother me. I also don’t mind racing in the rain. This is all part of cyclocross.”
