Léonore Moncond'huy, mayor of Poitiers, expressed her anger after the fatal Halloween shooting, denouncing the “inexact comments” made by the Minister of the Interior during his televised intervention on BFM.
Saturday November 2, 2024, the mayor of Poitiers, Léonore Moncond'huy, spoke in a press release after the tragic death of Anis, a 15-year-old teenager fatally injured by gunshot during a Halloween evening, information given by France Info.
Thursday evening, while a party organized by a local association brought together young people from the Couronneries neighborhood, shots broke out in front of a restaurant, injuring five minors, including Anis. The latter, shot in the head, did not survive. The next morning, on BFMTV, the Minister of the Interior spoke of “a brawl between rival gangs” involving “several hundred people”, also denouncing “narcocaillie” and a risk of “Mexicanization” of the country.
The mayor of Poitiers reacted strongly, asking that the minister “corrects his inaccurate statements”specifying that it was an “isolated shooting” and not a brawl involving hundreds of people. “ I hope the minister will set the record straight. We owe it to the family of the missing young man”declared the elected environmentalist Monday on France Bleu Poitou, recalling that such comments “feeds the amalgams between the youth of the neighborhoods and the traffickers”.
A suspect still on the run and details from the police
The police and the prosecution denied the version of a large brawl, mentioning a few scuffles which involved dozens of people near the scene of the shooting. The mayor also stressed that the death of the teenager was “quite tragic in itself” so that no “false information” is conveyed. In addition, she clarified that Anis “had absolutely no connection with drug trafficking”.
The young man's family, represented by his lawyer, also claimed that he had not “no history of delinquency”. Léonore Moncond'huy therefore accused the minister of having “instrumentalized” the image of the Couronneries district and Poitiers to fuel a speech “populist and alarmist”. “This is unacceptable “, she added.
The prosecution revealed that a suspect, already known for drug trafficking and under judicial supervision for a weapons case, was actively sought. The sources put forward by the Minister of the Interior therefore remain to be verified, underlines the mayor, who regrets the impact of a speech “security based on fear, which frightens the population”deploring the confusion made around this event.
Léonore Moncond'huy subsequently announced the upcoming reopening of the Couronneries police station, following confirmation from the prefect.
