Shortly:
  • A serious accident in Regensdorf injured six people, including three children.
  • A 39-year-old driver left the road and hit four vehicles.
  • The Regensdorf fire department and the municipal police were the first on site.
  • A medical problem probably led to the accident.

A driver caused one at the McDonald’s in Regensdorf on Thursday evening serious accident with six injured. He suffered serious injuries and had to be transported to the hospital by helicopter. A seriously injured woman was taken to hospital by ambulance. Three children had to be admitted to the children’s hospital with minor injuries. Another adult was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

What happened? Shortly after 7 p.m., a 39-year-old driver was driving on Neue Wehntalerstrasse from the direction of Dielsdorf to the intersection near the McDonald’s when he left the road on the right side. Driving halfway on the grass verge, he shot straight ahead, drove over a traffic island and crashed into four vehicles waiting at the traffic lights. The violent collision caused the car that caused the accident to overturn. The Audi with a foreign license plate was lying on its roof on top of another vehicle.

The blue light organizations were deployed with over 80 people.

The Regensdorf fire department was the first blue light organization to arrive at the scene of the accident together with the municipal police. The call was received at the operations control center at 7:09 p.m., the contingent arrived at 7:11 p.m., and three minutes later the first fire department officer was on site. Fire chief Laurent Cohn says how the evening went for him. He was celebrating his 46th birthday with his family when he received the alarm in the middle of his birthday dinner. “When I arrived at the scene of the accident, there was quite a bit of chaos,” he says. “There were a lot of people standing around and it wasn’t clear who was injured and how badly.”

Due to the many calls from the public, the operations center knew that it had to be a traffic accident with a mass gathering and several injured people. “Since everything was a bit unclear, the operations center immediately issued an operational level that was higher than an everyday event.” This triggered a large contingent with several fire departments, police, rescue services and a rescue helicopter.

The Regensdorf fire department was at the scene of the accident on Thursday evening with 29 firefighters. There were also around 12 emergency services from the Dielsdorf fire department, over 20 police officers and over 20 paramedics.

“The first priority is to provide initial care to patients and secure the scene of the accident,” explains Cohn. The fire department immediately decided that Neue Wehntalerstrasse had to be closed in both directions so that the rescue axis remained clear and the helicopter could land.

Medical problem suspected

The person who caused the accident was outside the car, which was on its roof, when the fire department arrived. According to the cantonal police, there is a suspicion that a medical problem led to the accident, said Cohn. After the accident, the driver was fully conscious, but then became less and less responsive.

The cars were standing in front of this light signal when the Audi came shooting from the left side.

The accident must have happened like this: A car was waiting at the traffic lights when the Audi crashed into the side and catapulted the car away. A woman was sitting in the car. The fire department had to cut the vehicle open because the driver was suspected of having a back injury. In another car there were children apparently dressed up for Halloween. They were taken to Children’s Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Regensdorf fire department was on site with 29 firefighters. There were also around 12 emergency services from the Dielsdorf fire department, over 20 police officers and over 20 paramedics. The emergency doctor from the children’s hospital was also on site, remembers Cohn. According to his notes, five ambulances, a large ambulance, three emergency doctors, a senior emergency doctor and the medical on-call officer were present. “We expect one ambulance per patient,” explains the fire chief.

The day after the serious accident at the intersection of Wehntalerstrasse and Adlikerstrasse in Regensdorf, markings on the road bear witness to the accident.

Laurent Cohn was able to say goodbye after two hours to celebrate his 46th birthday. His colleagues had to wait until midnight. Two hours after an accident, the long phase of recording the accident and cleaning up follows. “The majority of emergency services will be withdrawn, but a few will have to wait until everything is completed.”
