On Friday (November 1st) the door to Kaufland, Netto & Co. will remain closed in large parts of Germany. The reason: All Saints Day, a public holiday in five predominantly Catholic federal states. It ensures that the everyday lives of many people in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are thrown a little off track.

For those who traditionally do their weekend shopping on Fridays, this means they need to adjust their shopping plans. The vast majority of supermarkets and discounters such as Kaufland, Netto & Co. will not be open all day. Exceptions only apply to special branches, such as at train stations or airports.
Kaufland, Netto and Co. HERE closed on All Saints Day
Especially on Saturday (November 2nd), the already large crowds at Kaufland, Netto & Co. will increase noticeably. It is to be expected that many customers who normally meet their weekend needs on Friday will now only flock to supermarkets and discount stores on Saturday.

In nine other, predominantly Protestant federal states, All Saints’ Day is not celebrated as a public holiday. Instead, October 31st, Reformation Day, is a statutory holiday there. These federal states in which Kaufland, Netto & Co. do not open for their customers on Reformation Day are Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia.
Confessional differences in Germany
On this holiday, which is dedicated to the commemoration of Martin Luther’s posting of his theses in 1517, supermarkets and discount stores here are closed. The holiday regulations for Reformation Day and All Saints’ Day thus reflect the denominational differences in Germany and lead to different shopping rhythms depending on the region.
