“Our intention was not to shock”: a Spirou album deemed racist and sexist withdrawn from sale

LDupuis Editions announced on Thursday on the social network

“Our intention was not to shock or hurt anyone. We were quite saddened, but we understood. This is why we have made the decision to withdraw the work from sale. We are sorry,” the press officer for Dupuis editions, Ines Cuesta Guerra, told Belga on Thursday.

Many speeches

The album “Spirou et la Gorgone bleue” by Dany and Yann was published in September 2023. Since last weekend, speeches have multiplied on the networks to denounce caricatures of black people with ape-like appearance , but also “misogynistic” drawings of women.

“Strangely, when we see white people, we directly see that they are humans, but when they are black people, they clearly look like monkeys,” noted an Internet user last weekend in a video posted on TikTok, viewed nearly 770,000 times. “And all women are hypersexualized,” she added.

Conscious of a moral duty

Editions Dupuis reacted to the controversy, stating that “this album is part of a caricature style of representation inherited from another era”. “More aware than ever of our moral duty and the importance of comics as a publisher and more broadly of books in the evolution of societies, we take full responsibility today for this error of assessment . »
