Well launched into his weekend with the first day of testing, Johann Zarco fell back today and suffered several difficulties. His direct qualification for Q2 turned into 12th place on the grid, after which he managed to get a good start. The rest, however, proved more complicated, with four places lost in the first two laps, but above all imperfect sensations which made him say that the work carried out on his bike did not go in the right direction.

“I had too much trouble in the first laps. Not at the start, because I didn't lose a single position, which is a first this year. But I was a little unlucky in the first lap behind Di Giannantonio”, explains the French pilot. “He had to brake twice. The first to maybe avoid Bezzecchi, the second to avoid Fabio Quartararo. And I was really behind him, so I had to brake too.”

“It really broke the pace we could get at the start. I was behind Brad Binder in turn 4, and then it was like he wasn't there anymore, he was in front. By turn 12, I didn't want to overtake Di Giannantonio knowing he would be fast, but then two or even three guys arrived and I had to straighten the bike a little so I couldn't take advantage of my good start.

Once installed behind Quartararo, Zarco climbed the hierarchy like his compatriot, although he could not keep up with his pace. He first took advantage of the problems of Maverick Viñales and Pedro Acosta, then overtook Aleix Espargaró and Joan Mir to end up taking 12th place at the finish. A result which leaves him hungry, especially when thinking back to what he had seen positive about his Honda yesterday.

“In terms of rhythm, we lacked something,” deplores Zarco. “I couldn't get the good feeling from Friday. We tried things to make it work, but it seems like we took a little step backwards. So that's the situation at the moment. When we do [les choses] well, it's hard to achieve better. The best is the enemy of the good! [rires]”

“The conditions today were a little different,” he observes to try to find an explanation. “It seems that the circuit gives more grip, but we are trying to improve and I lost that good feeling that I had on the brakes yesterday. It's almost nothing, but this 'almost nothing' puts me in difficulty. Afterwards, I say that I am in difficulty but the times were almost similar to those of yesterday So I was not much slower, but the others were faster, which made the situation more complicated. “

“Like I said, should we tune the bike and, once everything is good, stop and just wait? But that's not the philosophy of racing. You always want more and we can't wait for things to happen. We have to work to improve things, but this feeling is very subtle and for the moment I've lost it. But the positive thing is that I had it yesterday, so it's. 'is good.'

“Today was not a very good day in terms of feeling, so I hope tomorrow will be better,” adds Johann Zarco, who is counting on a different tire strategy for the long race. “With the hard rear, knowing that I feel good in general when the rear tire is harder, I hope that I will be able to overtake at the start of the race, to catch that top 10 group because then, Everyone’s pace will be pretty similar.”
