Among the couples of artists who have marked the history of art, that formed by the Franco-American naturalized Swiss Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) and the Fribourgeois Jean Tinguely (1925-1991) remains one of the most famous, mainly for his creative madness and his sense of excess – as evidenced by the magnificent Tarots Garden, in Capalbio, in Tuscany. The duo is all the more emblematic of artistic companionship in that one has never overshadowed the other, while so many women have ended up being invisible – see photojournalist Lee Miller, played by Kate Winslet in a film also showing, who was long considered Man Ray’s muse, even though she was his assistant and he owes her a lot.
For her first production, actress Céline Sallette astutely chose to focus on the early career of Niki de Saint Phalle (formidably played by a disturbing Charlotte Le Bon), while she was married to the writer Harry Mathews. Her film, which has the merit of being carried by a real perspective, tells of a reconstruction, that of a woman broken by abuse suffered during childhood and who will little by little blossom by attending the group of New Realists . Tinguely, who will tell her that artists must be “the new terrorists”, remains in the shadows, like a benevolent figure pushing her to create on her own.
