Classes are not expected to resume this Wednesday at the Lycée Sévigné in Tourcoing. In the aftermath of the attack on a teacher hit by one of her students 18 years old, the shock is still palpable. The teacher asked the young girl to remove her veil in the courtyard of the establishment, which earned her a slap and several blows.
Following this incident, the classrooms remained deserted and will remain so this Wednesday. The principal gathered the high school teachers around elected officials and officials from the rectorate, all shocked but who remained silent as they left. In this working-class district of Tourquenn, the attack moved the students: “She’s an incredible teacher and she doesn’t deserve to be hit.”indicates one of them while another adds: “It’s a secular high school, we don’t have to put on the veil just before entering the high school or before leaving. That wouldn’t have had to go that far.”
The student is still in custody
Incidents linked to respect for secularism are rare in this professional and general establishment. Leïla, in her final year, is herself of Muslim faith: “I don’t understand why such violence. We know that we have to remove our veil and we cannot go against the school’s internal regulations.”
The student’s family implicated regrets the slap given by the teacher in response to the aggression. Their child, still in police custody, had already received another warning. The establishment’s video surveillance cameras are used by investigators.
