Sweden: Israeli embassy targeted by shooting Tuesday evening (police): News

The Israeli embassy in Stockholm was targeted by gunfire on Tuesday evening, which caused no injuries, and a criminal investigation was opened, Swedish police said on Wednesday.

An explosion was heard around 6 p.m. (4 p.m. GMT) on Tuesday in a street near the embassy in central Stockholm, she said.

“We have made findings that point to shootings at the Israeli embassy, but we do not want to disclose exactly what findings were made because the investigation is ongoing,” Rebecca Landberg, a senior security official, told AFP. Stockholm police press officer.

Impacts were observed on the building, police said in a press release.

This incident comes as two explosions were reported overnight near the Israeli embassy in Denmark, in the suburbs of Copenhagen.

In Stockholm, no one was injured and an investigation was opened for aggravated violation of weapons legislation, endangering others and illegal threats.

The police did not arrest anyone but numerous surveillance cameras are installed in the area and the police are working to collect and analyze material elements, the spokesperson stressed.

This incident occurs in a context of extreme tensions in the Middle East, Iran having launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel on Tuesday while the Israeli authorities promised that Tehran “(would) pay the price”.

Several incidents have occurred near the Israeli embassy in Sweden since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas in October 2023.

In February, a grenade was found in the embassy compound, which the Israeli ambassador called an attempted attack.

In May, shooting was observed outside the building, leading to increased security measures around Israeli interests in Sweden.

Swedish intelligence services claimed in late May that Iran was recruiting members of Swedish criminal gangs to carry out “acts of violence” against Israel, which Tehran denied.

Authorities have also recorded an increase in anti-Semitic acts in Sweden since the start of the Gaza war.
