Often, games released on PlayStation 2 are recognizable by their slightly dated graphics, or by this inexplicable vibe which allows them to be identified without asking too many questions. But this game released in 2007 is so detailed that you might believe it was released on another console!
Breathtaking visuals
When we talk about JRPGs, flagship licenses like Final Fantasy or even Persona often come to mind. But if there is indeed an underrated license, it is undoubtedly Valkyrie Profile. Developed by Tri-Ace and published by Square Enixthis saga inspired by Norse mythology debuted in 1999 with Valkyrie Profile. Thanks to the critical and commercial success of this first part, the license was able to evolve and offer several prequels, including Valkyrie Profile 2 : Silmeria in 2007 (2006 in Japan). Almost 20 years later, the game of Tri-Ace still looks great, and it’s hard to believe it was released on PlayStation 2.
Valkyrie Profile 2 was on another level for the PS2. Details are overflowing everywhere. The embroidery on the curtains, the sacred rays, the pre-calculated lighting and the shadows on the ceiling.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the game’s levels are mostly modeled in 2D, but they’re not lacking in detail. Quality textures cover every corner of the screen, and we even feel the delicacy of certain fabrics, like curtains that let the light filter through transparently. A work of great beauty, both aesthetically and in terms of its gameplay, Valkyrie Profile 2 : Silmeria is one of the most innovative games of its generation in terms of combat system.
