After the tracking stolen electric bikes or alarm systems, thanks to intelligent on-board protection, make way for securing the batteries! Bosch eBike Systems is taking advantage of the CES electronics show being held in Las Vegas from January 7 to 10, 2025 to unveil Battery Lockits digital anti-theft device for batteries. For Bosch, the idea here is to “complicate the task of thieves”.
A padlock for the batteries
City eBike, mountain bike, touring bike, gravel bike or cargo bike: nearly 5,000 references of electrically assisted bikes are equipped with Bosch eBike Systems, such as at Mustache (100% Bosch bikes), Winora, Rise & Müller, etc.
The owners of these frames, often sold very expensively (from around 3,000 euros) have only one fear: having their e-bike stolen. Or have an accessory stolen, such as the battery, which constitutes one of the most expensive elements in the event of replacement (several hundred euros). If Bosch already equips a number of bicycles with its equipment, all connected through its eBike Flow application, the equipment manufacturer's batteries will soon benefit from a new function.
Turn off the battery remotely
Named Battery Lockthis is based on a digital lock that can be activated remotely from the manufacturer's application (or its Kiox 300 and 500 screens). So, when the owner of an e-bike turns off their bike once at their destination, its battery will automatically lock. In the event of theft, and if inserted into a compatible bicycle, the battery will not provide pedaling assistance. Basically, it will be of no use… and cannot be resold either!
A bit like when you activate “Lost” mode for an iPhone that you have misplaced or been stolen: the device is no longer operational.
The Bosch digital padlock can be unlocked in the same way, and the battery immediately regains all its functions.
Bosch eBike Systems confirmed at CES in Las Vegas that the new function Battery Lock is compatible with all the batteries of its “intelligent” system. It will be deployed from summer 2025 as part of an update to its paid service Flow + (currently at 4.99 euros per month/39.99 euros per year), which already integrates the function eBike Alarm. We still don't know if Battery Lock will generate an additional cost.
