A member of the Regroupement des artisans du Centre-Mauricie, the Shawinigan resident DIYs Christmas decorations all year round. “I have already started making pieces for Christmas 2025,” says Lucie Garceau with a laugh, met at the Shawinigan Public Market where she sold a good part of her inventory over three weekends in November.
Stoneware pots to make nutcracker soldiers, skittles transformed into penguins or gnomes, old sinew snowshoes transformed into decorative paintings, Lucie Garceau does not lack imagination. “I've been tinkering for eight years, but four years I've only been making Christmas decorations. My husband works from 4 a.m. to midnight and my friends tell me I must be bored. I'm far from finding it long, I fuss over my decorations for entire evenings. It's a real passion of mine. »
Describing herself as very visual, an essential quality for finding new uses for everyday objects, Lucie Garceau also says she finds DIY ideas by visiting the Pinterest site. “There are three girls in the family and all three of us are good with our hands. Those around me know that I tinker and they regularly give me objects that they no longer use. »
In the absence of a Christmas fair from the Regroupement des artisans du Centre-Mauricie this year, Lucie Garceau took part in several small fairs held in residences for the elderly such as Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague in Grand-Mère and Christ the King in Shawinigan. At the Public Market, it was a first, but by the first weekend, she had already sold almost half of her decorations. “It’s a good thing because I was starting to run out of space at home,” she concludes with a smile.
