AMD FSR 3.1 Released: Image Generation Feature Now Works on Nvidia GeForce RTX and Intel Arc GPUs

AMD is delivering on its initial March 24 promise to release FSR 3.1 in the second quarter of this year. What really sets version 3.1 apart is the decoupling of image generation and upscaling. This allows Nvidia and Intel GPU owners to apply FSR 3.1 image generation on top of DLSS or XeSS. Intel is working on launching its own frame generation feature for Arc GPUs later this year, but in the meantime, Arc owners can use the next generation of AMD FSR 3.1 frames. Likewise, RTX 2000 and RTX 3000 which cannot benefit from the image generation function exclusive to RTX 4000 cards can now do so with the open-source FSR 3.1 implementation.

Currently, frame generation integration is available in five games, including Horzion: Forbidden West – Complete Edition, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Ghost of Tsushima – Director’s Cut, Marvel’s Spider-man Remastered and Spider -Man: Miles Morales. Support for God of War: Ragnarok will also be added very soon. Of the five games mentioned, AMD’s internal testing reveals a 3.1x increase in fps for Ghost of Tsushima, 2.5x for Horizon: Forbidden West, and a solid 3.6x for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. These are averages of results recorded on AMD Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs in 4K and 1440p resolutions.

On the upscaling front, FSR 3.1 brings improvements in temporal stability, with reduced flickering and shimmering, as well as reduced ghosting and better detail preservation. Additionally, AMD has made it easier for game developers to upgrade to future FSR versions, and frame generation is now available for the Vulkan API and Xbox Game Development Kit. The current game library that supports FSR 3 is 60 games, and AMD will continue to expand it as the list of games that support FSR frame generation grows.
