Messages is rarely forgotten by Apple, and the app has received several new features this year, in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and other systems. While it’s not a major update that shakes up Apple’s instant messaging, there are enough small changes and omissions filled to warrant a look. From more comprehensive reactions to spectacular text effects, to message scheduling and the addition of RCS, here’s everything that’s changing in Messages this year.

Tapback (finally) lets you choose any emoji

Reactions associated with a message using the Tapback function are no longer limited to the six proposals from previous versions. As a reminder, Messages previously offered six reactions when you activate this functionality with a tap or prolonged click on an element, or with the keyboard shortcut ⌘T for the last message received. You could add a heart, a thumbs up or down, a laugh, two exclamation points or even an exclamation point.

These six reactions remain present with the new version, of course, in new, more colorful versions. The heart is now displayed in pink, the thumbs are in yellow and there are blue, red and purple for the other three. The style also evolves with a relief effect which adds a little bit of personality to the reactions. These visuals will remain in the old style on previous versions of the systems.
