Although Samsung is best known as a smartphone manufacturer, the company also produces components. By announcing its new photo sensors, the Korean manufacturer wants to bridge the gap between the main and secondary cameras.

It is in a press release published on June 27, 2024 that Samsung reveals the arrival of three new photo sensors for smartphones. A technology that could be found on the next model from Samsung, the Galaxy S25. We offer you an overview.

Every pixel counts

The Korean manufacturer wishes “Improving image sensor performance and bridging the gap between primary and secondary cameras to deliver a consistent photography experience from all angles is the new direction of the industry.” It therefore announces three sensors with the sweet name of ISOCELL HP9, ISOCELL GNJ and ISOCELL JN5. Among these releases, it is the ISOCELL HP9 that attracts our attention, defining itself as the first 200 Mpx telephoto lens in the sector for smartphones.

Plus ultra

The ISOCELL HP9 is a 200-megapixel sensor with 12% improved light sensitivity and 10% improved autofocus. This sensor combined with the 2x and 4x zooms will allow for optical quality zoom up to 12x when paired with a 3x telephoto zoom module. Also paired with this sensor is the output of the ISOCELL JN5 and GNH at 50 megapixels respectively.

With these improvements, one can expect more vibrant colors as well as improved focus. The press release also informs us that these innovations are accompanied by improved energy performance with lower consumption. We are talking about an improvement of 29% in preview mode and 34% in video mode at 4K 60 fps. For the moment, Samsung is not talking about smartphones that could be equipped with these technologies. However, given the quality of the components, everything suggests that we could find them on the Ultra version of the Galaxy S25. The new arrivals are currently not expected before the start of 2025.
