The Apple brand has been trying to become greener for years. Projects are multiplying and Apple is communicating a lot about it, sometimes tarnishing its image. The campaign with the presence of “Mother Nature” in September 2023 has sparked many comments and Apple is regularly accused of greenwashing. Nevertheless, the Californian group is often cited as a reference when it comes to the sustainability of its products. And it has decided to ride the wave with its Self Service Repair program.

The idea is to give iPhone owners the tools they need to repair their device themselves. It is better to have the soul of a tinkerer to embark on the adventure, but the gesture remains no less interesting. Deployed in April 2022 in the United States before being extended to Europe, the program has included since last December a diagnostic tool until now reserved for Apple Stores and authorized repairers. This famous tool, called Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair, allows “users to understand the problems with their devices”. The good news is that it is now available in 32 European countries, including France.

“The Diagnostics tool allows users, along with Apple Authorized Service Centers and independent repair service providers, to test their devices to ensure proper operation and optimal performance of parts, and to identify those likely to require repair. With this expansion, Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair now supports iPhone, Mac, and Studio Display in 33 countries and 24 languages. »

With this software, iPhone owners can check if their product needs to be repaired. To do this, it looks at the condition and performance of the device by providing instructions, before indicating whether a repair is expected. In this case, the tool displays the parts that need to be replaced and provides access to repair manuals or original parts. When the program was launched in the United States, we reported that this interesting initiative was coming up against the pricing policy of the famous brand.

The Self Service Repair program supports 42 Apple products, including MacBook Airs with an M3 chip. The American firm reminds that it is worth having “significant experience in repairing electronic devices” to use it. Next year, Apple plans to extend its system to a thirty-fourth country: Canada.

This program is part of Apple’s efforts to extend the life of its products. On the updates side, Apple recently promised to keep the iPhone for at least five years. A slightly less ambitious promise than that of Samsung or Google, but the firm does not hesitate to extend this duration if necessary.
