Final Fantasy 7 fans don’t need Square Enix’s remakes to rewrite history: 27 years after the release of the cult game, the community managed to complete the adventure with Aerith.

Yes, Aerith dies in Final Fantasy 7 (the 1997 original). Sorry for the spoiler, but thirty years after the release of Square Enix’s cult RPG, the statute of limitations has expired! Since time immemorial, some players have had a dream: to finish the adventure with the heroine on their team, even if she is killed by the evil Sephiroth during the adventure… Well, yes, it is now done.

“Just with the game code”

It is the videographer Death_Unites_Us who echoes this discovery – in a YouTube video published on June 20, 2024 on his channel. “Without hacks, without touching save files, nothing at all, just with the game code, we’re going to bring Aerith back to life” he explains, before adding that it is not an easter egg left there by the developers, but a sequence of techniques which “breaks” the game in a significant way. Everything works on the original PC version of Final Fantasy 7 (at the time of CDs), but also on the one currently available on Steam.

A magical recipe and its secrets

So, what is the magic recipe that resurrects Aerith here? It is too long and complex to give it to you in a few lines, but Death_Unites_Us summarizes it as follows: “you have to Yuffie Warping three times (a bug which allows you to teleport to any stage of the game by loading a backup file, editor’s note), a bunch of settings, a ton of bugs found over the years.” The videographer for his part reveals the simplest route to achieve the feat.

Basically, the quest to bring Aerith back to life began eight years ago, when an enthusiast made an observation: when the heroine was kidnapped by Shinra, she was temporarily removed from the group before returning. once saved… At this point, there is therefore a line of code which allows the character to return to his team, and with Yuffie Warping, perhaps it is possible to dodge her death? We now know that it is possible, but it is easier said than done!
