In 2021, American actress Christina Applegate revealed that she suffered from multiple sclerosis. Since then, she has regularly discussed the subject in her podcast, “MeSsy”, as well as in the press. Determined to open discussions around this disease, which is ultimately relatively little known to the general public.
Pain that is difficult to bear
In the latest episode of her podcast, co-hosted with Jamie-Lynn Sigler – who also suffers from the disease – Christina Applegate spoke about the violence of the symptoms she suffered on a daily basis. “I'm lying in bed, screaming,” she says with frankness and emotion. “Jamie and I have different symptoms – everyone has different ways of seeing the illness manifest. I lie in bed screaming. It's sharp pain, pressure,” she explains.
In the past, the actress had already described her pain as “stabbing in the spine”.
Today, the disease continues to spread in the actress's body: “Sometimes, I can't even pick up my phone, because my hands are now affected,” she regrets. “I try to grab my phone, or the remote control to turn on the television, but I can’t hold them. I can’t open bottles anymore,” she admits.
“I pee in my diaper”
In her podcast, Christina Applegate explains that she assesses how difficult her day will be based on how she feels when she wakes up. “Jamie knows I stay in bed all the time. I mean, I've worked for almost 50 years, so I'm okay with that,” says the 52-year-old actress and producer. “But if I put my feet on the ground and they hurt like hell to the touch, I'm like, 'Yeah. I'm going to go back to my bed and pee in my diaper because I don't want to walk to the damn bathroom.”
All before specifying that it is a joke: “Actually, I don't lie down here and I don't pee in my diaper. It's just a joke, but you should know that it is terribly painful and embarrassing.”
