“It is strictly forbidden to throw objects and leave waste and food in the doe park,” recalls the Municipality of Payerne on its page FacebookFriday. The reason? Two fawns have died in recent days as a result of inappropriate behavior by the public. “The first seems to have died from a thrown object last week. The second, which was discovered this morning, would have ingested waste, including plastics,” explains Nadège Surchat-Delpédro, communications and promotion manager for the capital.

This is not the first time that such tragedies have occurred in this park, offered to the city by the development company, after the inauguration of the Collège de la Promenade in 1903. In 2020, a doe was stoned to death. Five years ago, rabbits had been thrown into a water trough. Nevertheless, the Payernois are attached to it and come in large numbers to contemplate the animals.

Maintenance in question

The double incident will certainly raise the question of maintaining this park, now at the center of a growing city. Municipal councilor Yannick Moser (PSIP) recently expressed concern about compliance with the veterinary standards of the enclosure and the investments planned there.

Responsible for the file, Monique Picinali responded that “given the population’s attachment to the park, it is not possible to move it or remove it”, adding that a veterinary check had recently taken place. “We have just received the results and the audit says the park is in order. However, I will draw up an estimate to raise the fence, in order to better protect the animals,” adds the municipal official.

As part of the work of redevelopment of the crossroads and Place Guisanwork is also planned at Parc aux Biches. But the construction site has been regularly delayed for ages.
