Panasonic draws the Lumix GH7 and goes all-in on the video

Launched two years ago, the GH6 has carved out a place of choice in the setup of many videographers and within film crews around the world. Its successor, the present GH7, iterates on excellent foundations and refines its proposal, in particular thanks to faster autofocus and advanced features for video.

A versatile hybrid

But before detailing the video part, let’s take a look at the technical sheet of the latest from Panasonic. The Lumix GH7 is obviously still a hybrid camera, and it uses the same 25.2 Mpx BSI CMOS sensor (micro 4/3 format) as its predecessor. Its design is largely unchanged and weighs around 805 grams with its battery and SD card.

This was already one of the strengths of the GH6, and the hybrid autofocus with phase and contrast detection takes a new leap forward in this edition. This year we are increasing to 779 detection points and Panasonic algorithms now add recognition of planes and trains. Even better: the photographer can now choose whether he wants to focus on the entire subject or only the targeted part (the driver of a car for example).

Finally, Panasonic has also strengthened the dual stabilization of its device. Thanks to several adjustment modes, the user can more or less compensate for unwanted movements while traveling and therefore obtain a smoother image during filming or photoshoots.

Tropicalized, the Lumix GH7 will therefore be able to accompany you everywhere, whatever the weather conditions.

Advanced video capabilities

But, as we have said, it is especially videographers that Panasonic seeks to attract attention. The brand is therefore deploying a battery of features capable of putting stars in their eyes with its GH7.

The first is the appearance of a V-Log profile with a wider dynamic range of 13 stops. A new feature that will allow calibrators to be even more precise in their work. Editors will appreciate the GH7’s ability to record movies directly onto the card in ProRes 422 HQ 5.7K 30p and ProRes RAW HQ. Formats allowing maximum detail to be retained in the image.

Audio capture also improves on the Lumix GH7. This is a world first, the manufacturer announces: its latest gem offers floating 32-bit audio recording. That is to say, the device will automatically adjust the gain of the connected microphone so that all sounds are usable. Whether it’s the weakest or the strongest frequencies. Please note, an accessory (the XLR or DMW-XLR2 module) is necessary to activate this function (€549, all the same)!

The Panasonic Lumix GH7 will be marketed in July 2024 for €2,199 naked. A price identical to its predecessor. A kit including a Lumix G 12-60 mm lens (ƒ/3.5-5.6) will be priced at €2,399, and another with a Leica DG 12-60 lens (ƒ/2.8-4.0 ) at €2,799.
