We may tend to forget it, but this RPG can claim the title of GOTY 2024. And it is neither Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth nor Metaphor ReFantazio.
The end of the year is fast approaching, and we’re slowly starting to take stock of the games that have had an impact on us since January… And frankly, there are people competing for the title of GOTY 2024! On the reference site Metacritic, an impressive top trio – the Elden Ring DLC, Astro Bot and Metaphor ReFantazio – share the podium with each, a score of 94/100. In the leading pack, we also find Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the indie gems UFO 50 and Animal Well, or Tekken 8. But the rest of the ranking is clearly not to be neglected. Moreover, in 29th position, there is an excellent RPG which has just reached an important milestone.
A studio like no other
This role-playing game is Unicorn Overlord, the latest creation from VanillaWare. This Japanese studio has an unusual specialty… Change genres regularly and excel every time (with the addition of always super neat artistic direction)! As proof, we want Muramasa: The Demon Blade, a very good action game steeped in Japanese folklore, or more recently 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, a superb mix between visual novel and tactical role-playing game. Unicorn Overlord is no exception. Recently, we also learned that the title had exceeded 1 million units sold. A great success. It’s available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, One and Switch (there is no PC version).
An RPG with insane wealth
Here, we play a certain Alain, legitimate heir to the throne of Cornia. He wishes to take revenge on Glavius, a bloodthirsty warrior who, 10 years earlier, overthrew the capital of Grand Corinne. Our hero will therefore take back the lands that rightfully belong to him – continent by continent – accompanied by heroes of various classes (lord, legionnaire, sorcerer, ecclesiastic).
To bring all this to life, VanillaWare relies on a mix between the exploration of a kind of open world and, on the combat side, real-time strategy, turn-based,car battler (for the latter, think Dota Underlords). Roughly speaking, in a confrontation, you will have to move your units in real time and, when one of your battalions encounters an opposing formation, time freezes and passes turn by turn-car battler. Rather than clumsily summarizing everything, we refer you to our test. Just keep in mind that this is one of the best RPGs of the year.
