“Comet of the century”: the most beautiful images of its return visible to the naked eye (or almost) in France

The “comet of the century” has been observable again in the French sky since this Saturday evening.

Named Tsuchinshan-Atlas, it will still be visible for around ten nights.

Some astronomy enthusiasts have started to share their most beautiful photos of this celestial spectacle.

Some have already been able to observe it between September 27 and October 2. Comet A3 Tsushinshan-Atlas, nicknamed “comet of the century” because of the possibility of seeing it with the naked eye thanks to its powerful luminosity, could once again be seen in the sky of this Saturday, October 12 in the evening and will be visible for ten more nights. This time, you had to look west, just after sunset, to be able to observe it. This is what some astronomy enthusiasts or simply curious people did not fail to do, who began to share their photos on the Web.

“C/2023A3 in the sky of Charente maritime this evening”, for example, rejoiced an Internet user on X, formerly Twitter, accompanying his post with a photo of this celestial spectacle. “Here are the photos I managed to take of the comet,” agrees a second, while another writes: “here is the famous Atlas comet long awaited from Capbreton this evening, zoom to 100 mm with camera, quite difficult to distinguish it with the naked eye however.”

Indeed, in other publications posted Saturday evening, the frustration was very palpable. “Sorry, but I’m greedy and I want more than that after announcing ‘the comet of the century’,” says one Internet user, while another prefers to see the glass half full: “It’s very weak, but it’s there.”

Skeptical of their captured images, some prefer to seek the opinion of experts: “Comet of the century, or not, your scientific opinions please!”

C/2023 A3, its scientific name, had already been observed on Friday evening in North America, reports Éric Lagadec, astrophysicist at the Côte d’Azur Observatory (southern France), to AFP.
